Despite increased investments and efforts, many member states are lagging behind the goals set for high-speed internet access and IT workforce development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commission expressed concern that without urgent reforms and coordinated efforts, the EU may fall short of its ambition to become a global digital leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe pace of digital progress must accelerate. We risk a fragmented digital market and growing inequality across regions,\u201d said EU Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Shortcomings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only\u00a0<strong>55% of SMEs<\/strong>\u00a0have reached a basic level of digital intensity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less than\u00a0<strong>70% of adults<\/strong>\u00a0possess basic digital skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rural areas still face limited access to high-speed networks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The report urges national governments to strengthen collaboration with the private sector, streamline funding mechanisms, and increase digital education at all levels.
